Research and Evaluation Projects

RISE research and evaluation projects are the result of partnerships with internal and external clients. Projects are funded by federal agencies (e.g., National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education) and state agencies (e.g., Iowa State Legislature, Iowa Department of Education), and individual schools, colleges, universities, and organizations.

Achieving Maximum Potential (AMP) Program

The Research Institute for Studies in Education was hired by Youth and Shelter Services, Inc. (YSS) to conduct an assessment of the AMP program. The Program & Activity Assessment Tool (PAAT) is used to measure how much and how well the program provides its members a learning experience that promotes positive youth development.

Brandi Geisinger is collaborating with the Iowa State University Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering to evaluate the undergraduate program by asking graduating seniors to respond to exit surveys.

Biological Materials and Processes (BioMaP) Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The BioMap REU is a summer research program in which undergraduate students become active members of interdisciplinary groups and work with faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, and industry. Annual evaluation of the BioMaP REU program includes pre- and post-program surveys. The evaluation of the program has been informed by other studies of REU students and outcomes, as well as best practices for evaluation.

Cases for Teaching Responsible Communication of Science

RISE conducts the evaluation focusing in student pre and post responses of their understanding of ethical issue in science communication and instructor ratings of usefulness of the case study approach.

CBiRC Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)

Brandi Geisinger and Mari Kemis, in collaboration with Karri Haen, are leading the evaluation of the NSF Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program at Iowa State University. The evaluation was informed by the literature on the constructivist sociocultural professional development model, evidence of inadequate science teacher preparation, and evidence of best practices for science teacher preparation.

    CBiRC Research Experiences for Undergraduates

    Brandi Geisinger and Mari Kemis serve as evaluators for the NSF Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, which particularly focuses on undergraduate student research training. Annual evaluation of the REU program includes pre- and post-program surveys, annual focus groups, and follow-up surveys.

    CBiRC Summer Academy for Middle School Teachers

    Brandi Geisinger and Mari Kemis serve as evaluators for the NSF Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) Summer Academy for Middle School Teachers program. The Summer Academy program evaluation involves annual pre-program and post-program surveys, as well as a focus group at the end of the program.

    CBiRC Young Engineers and Scientists

    Brandi Geisinger and Mari Kemis serve as evaluators for the Young Engineers and Scientists (YES) program, which is a Center for Biorenewable Chemicals Program sponsored by the NSF. Evaluation of the Young Engineers and Scientists (YES) program includes the administration of a pre-program survey to determine student interest and knowledge of relevant scientific principles, a focus group conducted at the end of the research internship, and a post-survey conducted at the end of the following school year.

    CenUSA Bioenergy Internship

    Brandi Geisinger serves as the lead evaluator for the USDA-funded CenUSA Bioenergy Internship program, which is an eight-week research program that helps address the bioenergy value chain. The evaluation of the CenUSA program utilizes pre-program and post-program surveys and post-program focus groups.

    Character Counts Puerto Rico

    The Josephson Institute (National CHARACTER COUNTS!) is contracting with RISE for the development of an evaluation of the process and outcomes of the Tus Valores Cuentan program implementation in all Puerto Rico public schools.

    Community College Initiative (CCI) Program Evaluation

    RISE provides comprehensive evaluation of the CCI Program, which annually hosts upward of 150 students from countries such as Brazil, Egypt, and Pakistan at community colleges across the U.S. The CCI Program Evaluation examines the nature of experiences of participating students, student mentor families, project coordinators, and community college professionals, as well as CCI Program alumni to determine whether and how program goals are being met.

    Developing Resources for CISE REU PIs

    Brandi Geisinger is serving as the evaluator for the NSF Developing Resources for CISE REU PIs project. The evaluation will focus on identifying areas of need and evaluating the effectiveness of the web-based resources.

    Education for Women in Agriculture

    RISE has worked with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Value Added Agriculture and Women in Agriculture programs to design and implement a sound systematic evaluation process in their courses for women farmers and ranchers.

    Effective Mentoring of Student Researchers Study

    RISE researchers Brandi Geisinger, Mari Kemis, and Arlene de la Mora, in conjunction with ISU faculty member Raj Raman, are working to learn about effective and ineffective mentoring strategies for student researchers. This work, funded, in part, by the NSF Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC), originally stemmed out of the realization that mentoring was an essential component of undergraduate students' experiences and successes in summer research programs.

    Engaging Female Community College STEM Transfer Students

    RISE partnered with ISU's Program for Women in Science (PWSE) to assess the experiences of female community college students who transferred into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in Fall Semester 2011. The goal of this project was to determine how and when PWSE should be connecting with these students and what existing barriers prevent them from connecting or engaging at ISU. The results inform PWSE programming and services that help women successfully complete STEM degree programs via the community college pathway

    Evaluation of a Dual Language Program

    RISE is working with an Iowa PK-12 school district to evaluate their dual language curriculum option. Students in the program receive half their instruction in English and half in Spanish with the goal of developing both native English speaking and native Spanish speaking students who are bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.

    Evaluation of AgrowKnowledge

    AgrowKnowledge, the National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education, is an Advanced Technician Education project of the National Science Foundation for which RISE serves as external evaluator.

    Evaluation of In-depth Mathematical Practices and Content Teacher Training (IMPACT2)

    In order to determine whether project goals have been met, RISE developed an evaluation plan that analyzes data from a variety of sources including teacher and student pre-post knowledge, teacher ratings of and reflections on project activities, and online resources and discussions.

    Expanding IWCCʼs Distance Education Capacity

    RISE is evaluating Iowa Western Community Collegeʼs institutional web-based distance learning program. The program goals include (1) increasing capacity to develop and support online and hybrid courses across general education and high-demand nursing curricula, (2) develop and implement a web portal and flexible online student services that supports web-based programming, and (3) provide extensive faculty and staff professional development in targeted areas.

    Experimental Design Ability Test (Biology 313)

    Brandi Geisinger serves as the evaluator for the Principles of Genetics Laboratory at Iowa State University, funded by a Miller Faculty Fellowship Award. This course made improvements to instructional delivery in order to deepen students' understanding of genetics concepts and research. The evaluation of the instructional changes uses the Sirum and Humburg (2011) Experimental Design Ability Test (EDAT) to assess students' ability to design a research experiment.

    George Washington Carver Summer Research Internship Program

    Brandi Geisinger serves as the lead evaluator for the George Washington Carver Summer Research Internship Programs. Annual evaluation of the programs include pre- and post-program surveys and focus groups.

    Information Technology-Credentials to Careers (ITC2) - Iowa Western Community College

    RISE serves as the external evaluator on the Information Technology-Credentials to Careers (ITC2) project. The evaluation of the ITC2project assesses program benefits, strengths, and challenges in implementing the project at each participating community college. In addition, will examine the extent to which participation in the ITC2 Program has impacted labor force outcomes for participants (e.g., wages, jobs) as well as the impact on completion of awards (i.e., certificates, degrees, diplomas).

    International Studies: Mandarin Chinese Evaluation

    RISE serves as external evaluator for the Minnesota "District 196 International Studies: Mandarin Chinese" project to implement courses in Chinese language and culture in grades K-12.

    Iowa Advanced-Manufacturing (I-AM): A Talent Success Strategy for the 21st Century Workforce
    Des Moines Community College

    RISE serves as the external evaluator on the Iowa Advanced Manufacturing (I-AM) project. The evaluation of the I-AM project assesses program benefits, strengths, and challenges in implementing the project at each participating community college. In addition, RISE will examine the extent to which participation in an I-AM Signature Program (e.g., welding, machining, industrial maintenance) has an affect on completion of awards/certificates/degree/diplomas and wages.

    Iowa Commission on Volunteer Services

    RISE is conducting an extensive evaluation to identify the impacts and outcomes of projects supported by the Volunteer Generation Fund. This will allow the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Services and its grantees to make continuous, data-driven improvements to volunteer services across the state of Iowa.

    Iowa STEM Education Evaluation (I-SEE)

    RISE is responsible for conducting a process evaluation that examines resources, needs, facilitating conditions, and barriers to the development and growth of the Iowa statewide STEM initiative.

    Iowa STEM Monitoring Project

    The Iowa STEM Monitoring Project (ISMP) is a multi-faceted and collaborative effort that works in support of the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council. The purpose of the ISMP is to systematically observe a series of defined metrics and sources to examine changes regarding STEM education and economic development in Iowa centered on the activities of the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council.

    Iowa's Information Technology, Healthcare, Utilities, and Manufacturing (IHUM) - Hawkeye Community College

    RISE serves as the external evaluator on the IHUM project. The evaluation of the IHUM project assesses program benefits, strengths, and challenges in implementing the project at each participating community college. In addition, will examine the extent to which participation in the IHUM Program impacts labor force outcomes for participants (e.g., wages, jobs) as well as the affect participation has on completion of awards (e.g, certificate, degree, diploma).

    Iowa's Symbi GK-12 Project

    The Symbi evaluation addresses critical questions at the intersection of graduate research in biorenewable chemicals, communication of science topics to non-technical audiences, and middle school STEM education in Iowa.

    ISU College of Engineering Climate Study

    Brandi Geisinger and Mari Kemis are working with the ISU College of Engineering to evaluate the climate of the college for a diverse body of undergraduate students. RISE compiled a survey instrument informed by the scientific literature (e.g., Rankin & Reason, 2008) and designed to meet the specific needs of the college. Focus groups are planned to take place with specific groups of underrepresented students.

    ISU Department Enhancement Program

    The DEP formed as a result of ADVANCE, an NSF funded program designed to help to recruit and retain a diverse, highly qualified and cohesive faculty body. The ISU DEP conducts focus groups and interviews to elicit information about the cultures of specific departments on campus and compiles reports outlining common themes and findings in order to further department goals and facilitate long-term planning.

    Juvenile Justice Reentry Project Evaluation

    The Juvenile Reentry System (JReS) effort is a multi-faceted initiative led by the Division of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning (CJJP), the Iowa Department of Human Rights. It is funded by the U.S Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The aim is to reduce recidivism of youth returning from out-of-home residential placement by implementing a more robust reentry system in Iowa's juvenile justice system.

    Meta!Blast: A Cell and Metabolic Adventure

    RISE oversees the development and implementation of assessment activities for Meta!Blast, a 3D interactive module for cell and metabolic biology.

    Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Genomics (MBBG) Research Experiences for Teachers (RET)

    Brandi Geisinger and Mari Kemis are leading the evaluation of the Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Genomics (MBBG) Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program at Iowa State University.

    NSF Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC)

    RISE conducts the evaluation of CBiRC activities, focusing on pre-college and university educational programs, as well as goal areas for Center operation and institutional diversity.

    Pathways to Engineering Technology Careers (PETC)
    Eastern Iowa Community College

    RISE serves as the external evaluator on the PETC project. The evaluation of the PETC project assesses program benefits, strengths, and challenges in implementing the project at Eastern Iowa Community College. In addition, will examine the extent to which participation in the program impacts labor force outcomes for participants (e.g., wages, jobs) as well as the affect on completion of awards (i.e., certificates, degrees, diplomas).

    Personal and Social Responsibility Inventory (PSRI)

    RISE oversees the national administration of the Personal and Social Responsibility Inventory (PSRI) and provides participating colleges and universities with reports that include institution specific and national benchmarking data.

    Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support Statewide

    RISE has contracted with the Iowa Department of Education to evaluate the process and outcomes of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) program implementation in Iowa public schools.

    Small Talk Story County

    Small Talk Story County (STSC) focuses on helping parents improve the quantity and quality of the language environment of the home.

    Spaceflight Operations Workshop

    Brandi Geisinger serves as the lead evaluator of the Iowa State University Spaceflight Operations Workshop. The evaluation of the Spaceflight Operations Workshop utilizes pre-program and post-program surveys, and was informed by best practices for evaluation, literature on students summer research experiences, and literature on servant leadership.

    SPIRE-EIT Research Experiences for Undergraduates

    Brandi Geisinger is the lead evaluator of the NSF Summer Program for Interdisciplinary Research and Education - Emerging Interface Technologies (SPIRE-EIT) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Annual evaluation of the REU program includes pre- and post-program surveys and focus groups.

    STEM: Student Enrollment and Engagement through Connections (SEEC) Evaluation

    RISE facilitates evaluation of the SEEC program through collecting, examining, and reporting existing institutional data on SEEC students' pre-college characteristics and college achievements. RISE also develops survey instruments and focus group and interview protocols that provide greater context for understanding the experiences of students, researchers, faculty, and administrators affiliated with SEEC.

    Teachers Empowered to Advance Change in Mathematics (TEACH MATH)

    RISE serves as external evaluator for the TEACH MATH project. RISE also supports the TEACH MATH project through data management and analyses of the TEACH MATH pre- and post-course methods dataset.

    The Global Perspective Inventory (GPI)

    The Global Perspective Inventory (GPI) is a web-based assessment of individual experiences and development of a global perspective. The GPI measures how students think, view themselves as people with cultural heritage, and relate to others from other cultures, backgrounds and values.

    Undergraduate Research Programs

    RISE conducts the evaluations of a number of undergraduate research programs, including NSF-sponsored REU programs, on an annual basis with the goal of evaluating student learning, program satisfaction, and challenges encountered in the program.

    University of Northern Iowa IDREHSI Research Experiences for Undergraduates

    Brandi Geisinger serves as the lead evaluator for the NSF Interdisciplinary Research Experience in Hyperspectral Imaging (IDREHSI) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Northern Iowa. Annual evaluation of the REU program includes pre- and post-program surveys and focus groups.

    Making sense of Mathematics and teaching II: Learning and Leading (MSMTII) is a three-year professional development program designed to increase elementary teachers' mathematical content knowledge for teaching, improve their instructional practices, and as a result, improve their students' achievement in mathematics.

    University of Notre Dame Computing RET

    Mari Kemis and Brandi Geisinger lead the evaluation of the NSF-funded Computing Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Program at the University of Notre Dame. The annual evaluation of the Computing RET program utilizes pre-program, post-program, and follow-up surveys, as well as weekly reflections during the program and a post-program focus group.

    Vision 2020

    The Research Institute for Studies in Education (RISE) at Iowa State University serves as external evaluator for Fayette County Kentucky school district's "2020 Vision: Critical Languages for the 21st Century" project designed to incorporate instruction in Chinese and Japanese language and culture into the K-12 curriculum.

    WESEP Research Experiences for Undergraduates

    Brandi Geisinger is the lead evaluator of the NSF Wind Energy Science, Engineering, and Policy (WESEP) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). Annual evaluation of the REU program includes pre- and post-program surveys and focus groups.

    Wind Energy Science and Policy Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (WESEP IGERT)

    RISE collaborates with an external evaluator to evaluate the WESEP IGERT program's impact on students and faculty in the program and the field of wind energy science as a whole.
