November 1, 2016
Brandi Geisinger, Vincent Genareo, Mari Kemis, and Joshua Mitchell, of the Research Institute for Studies in Education, presented Avoiding the sinking ship: The evaluation of multi-million dollar failures at the 2017 annual meeting of the American Evaluation Association in Atlanta, Georgia. The team discussed six strategies for dealing with unexpected or undesirable evaluation results, including: considering the evaluation politics, keeping stakeholders informed about evaluation procedures and findings, demonstrating that the evaluation was conducted in alignment with the Program Evaluation Standards, questioning the data when appropriate, keeping utility at the forefront, and highlighting program benefits along with the challenges. Case study examples were provided.
