RISE partners with animal science on transfer student experience study
January 7, 2018
Researchers in the Department of Animal Science and the School of Education are studying the experiences of transfer students at Iowa State University. The goal of the study is to understand existing support structures as well as difficulties to enhance the transition experience of students at Iowa State.
The research team is led by Jennifer Bundy and Joshua Mitchell. Bundy is an assistant professor and advising coordinator in the Department of Animal Science. Mitchell is a project manager for the Research Institute for Studies in Education (RISE) and a lecturer in the School of Education (SOE). They are joined by
- Cori Siberski, a graduate research assistant in the Department of Animal Science
- Kevin Hemer, a graduate research assistant in RISE and doctoral candidate in the SOE
The team conducted six focus groups with first-semester transfer students in the end of Fall 2017. Data collected from the focus groups will help the identify themes regarding areas of challenge and support in the transition process. The data will be used to develop a survey of transfer student experiences in the Department of Animal Science. The survey could be expanded to a larger sample, including the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and members of Iowa State.
