Local Motion is a three-year project to improve physical education and school and community environments funded by the U. S. Department of Education’s Carol M. White PEP grant program. Five Polk county (Iowa) school districts, Iowa State University Extension, and several community-based organizations collaborate to provide new equipment, enhanced curriculum and instruction, and community opportunities to enhance the health and well being of area youth. Local Motion builds on the foundation established by two previous PEP grants in Des Moines Independent Schools. RISE and ISU faculty member Greg Welk (Kinesiology) serve as project evaluators. In addition to collecting student physical performance data, surveys and/or focus groups are used to determine the involvement, changes, opinions, and recommendations of students, teachers, school administrators, and community members.
