Michael Pate is a third year doctoral student in the agricultural education and studies department at Iowa State University (ISU). Before coming to ISU, he spent 3 years teaching agriculture and life sciences at the high school level. Michael earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Arkansas. He genuinely enjoys teaching. Michael has a sincere interest in developing a professional focus on understanding how people learn and apply knowledge in agriculturally-related settings. He has taught several courses for the agricultural education and studies department. His efforts and dedication to teaching were recognized with a Graduate Teaching Excellence Award. He also developed and taught the course AGEDS 488, methods for teaching agricultural mechanics. This course is now required for all agriculture and life science education majors choosing the teacher certification option. Michael is a Preparing Future Faculty Fellow. His dissertation research investigates the effects of metacognitive instructional strategies on secondary career and technical students' problem solving success. Michael aspires to be a teacher educator at a land-grant institution.
